Z512, Drive In Wheelchair Transporter

ZEV 512

DRIVE IN MOBILITY TRANSPORTER

SEATING TO THREE PERSONS, MORE SPEED, AND RANGE

The model 512 is the newest vehicle in the ZEV mobility line.

The vehicle is i compliance with USA regulations to be a street legal LSV or MSV as a State may allow. This allows the vehicle to be driven up to 35 mph or 57 kmh depending on the state that you live in.

·      The 512 has a rear ramp and the ability to drive a wheelchair into the vehicle and behind the steering wheel where it becomes the driver’s seat.  The ramp is controlled by a remote key fob and by a control on the dash. The key fob also controls the power door locks.

·      To the right of the driver seat is a standard passenger seat with a lockable compartment underneath.

·      To the rear of the passenger seat on the right is room for storage and hauling capacity without blocking the wheelchair              exit or a 2nd seat can be installed. See seats photo below.

CONTROLS.

All controls are on the hands.  No foot controls unless requested.

This vehicle has two main options for controls.

1)   A left side steering wheel with a passenger seat on the right

2)   A center steering wheel with only the wheelchair in the front row.

The main control bar then, the long black lever in the center as seen below, is generally the brake and the accelerator. This lever can be on the drivers left or right as needed.

An optional foot operated throttle can be installed or a thumb throttle can be installed on the brake lever. The brake must remain on the lever.

The red ball shown above is the parking brake lock.  When the brake lever is pushed full forward, the ball can be pushed forward to lock all brakes on.

The metal arms seen above below the steering wheel in the foot well are for the use of a standard, 2 large wheel wheelchair, powered or not – assuming the owner does not use a large power chair or wishes to alternate.

Steering wheel center option shown below.  Standard steering shown above.

A passenger seat is to the drivers right with an optional 2nd row right side passenger seat.  The standard seats are a bucket with a headrest of the style and model shown at this time (viewed in another vehicle).

WHEEL CHAIR ENTRY – The rear ramp is controlled by the key fob to lower as you approach the vehicle or seek to leave the vehicle. A 2nd rear ramp drop control is on the dash.

No gears to shift. The center knob is turned to D for Drive, or R for reverse, or N for Neutral

The standard car has:

 ·      Electric rear ramp controlled by key fob.

·      Electric locking doors controlled by key fob

·      Electric Power windows

License and Driving

The vehicle is designed as a Mobility Vehicle from the start. It is not a conversion.

OPDMD vehicles.

The Department of Justice published revised final regulations implementing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for title II (State and local government services) and title III (public accommodations and commercial facilities) on September 15, 2010, in the Federal Register.

The rule change as it applies to vehicle went into effect in 2011.

The ADA established clarification of specific vehicles types and the allowance of their use.

These devices are called “other power-driven mobility device” (OPDMD) in the rule. OPDMD is defined in the new rules as “any mobility device powered by batteries, fuel, or other engines . . . that is used by individuals with mobility disabilities for the purpose of locomotion, including golf cars, electronic personal assistance mobility devices … such as the Segway® PT, or any mobility device designed to operate in areas without defined pedestrian routes, but that is not a wheelchair”.

When an OPDMD is being used by a person with a mobility disability it is a legal vehicle class. When driven by someone without a disability, these OPDMD lose their special status and are illegal to drive on the roads without being registered as an LSV (low speed vehicle) or MSV (medium speed vehicle).

LSV vehicle

The vehicle is also built in conformity with US LSV and MSV vehicle rules. It can be titled and or licensed by the State as an LSV or MSV if the customer decides not to operate as an OPDMD

Motorcycle

In some states the vehicles can be licensed as a motorcycle instead of an LSV or MSV, despite having 4 wheels. This sort of licensing allows the vehicles to run higher speeds than as an LSV, and does signify that the ZEV have not been crash tested nor are they equipped with air bags. They do have anti whiplash head rests and seat belts and wheelchair restraints.
